Japan 1951

The first country to issue a hockey stamp was Japan in 1951 on the occasion of the 6th National Athletic meeting at Hiroshima.

Since then, over a hundred countries have issued hockey stamps.

I first became interested in hockey stamps when I was researching on Sikh Hockey Olympians in 2005.

I found seven hockey stamps which featured Sikh Hockey Players. My interest grew from then onwards and I began collecting hockey stamps. I've now decided to share my collection with others.

The biggest collection I have seen to date belongs to Mike Smith and David Wareham of England. They have a collection of over 400 hockey stamps.

Their impressive collection has mint stamps, used stamps, imperforate stamps, overprint stamps, sets of stamps, miniture sheets and first day covers.

Ernie Wall

I have also had the opportunity of seeing Ernie Wall's collection in Scotland.

Ernie has been very supportive and has added several stamps to my collection. He has a few stamps that I do not have. These will be displayed on the site.

Antoni Karwacki of Poland (right), with whom I often communicate, wrote a book " HOKEJ NA TRAWIE" with images of various hockey stamps. This is the only publication on hockey stamps that I have come across.

Antoni Karwacki
Hockey Stamps book He has been very supportive with information on stamps and has added several stamps and Postcards from Poland to my collection.

David Sumpter, a former Southern Counties Umpire and a member of East Grinstead Hockey Club is another hockey stamp collector. David has a large collection of hockey stamps, First Day Covers, Postcards, historical collection of hockey publications e.g. team sheets/match programmes from year 1903.

David regularly gives talks at Stamp Societies on Thematic collection and his topic in February 2010 is "It's a Girl's Game".

I am aware that Morley Pecker also has a big collection in Belgium.

Philippe Demaret of Belgium is another Hockey stamp collector whom I met at the Champions Trophy in Boom in 2006.

Ernie Wall has also told me Domfil Hockey Albums (Spain) but I understand that they have stopped trading.

I have read of the great collection of Hockey stamp collectors by Bill Malherbe of Pretoria, South Africa. I am also aware of the collection of the late Ken Howells of England.

I'm keen to find out the whereabouts of these collections.

I am grateful to my brother, Kul Bahra, for all his encouragement and assistance. With his support and immense philatelic knowledge I have put together this collection.

The purpose of this website is to share the interest, to add stamps that are not in my collection and to inform others of the stamps that are available. There is no commerical interest.

Readers are invited to send images of stamps that are not on this site for inclusion.

Acknowledgement will duly be given.
